Olympic Stars With Iona University Connections Finding Glory In Paris

Six well-known members of Gael Nation, current and past, are participating in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in a big way.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Athletes and coaches with connections to Iona University are finding glory on the world stage.

The Paris games are shining a bright spotlight on the school. US Women’s Soccer Head Coach Emma Hayes, the former Iona University Head Coach, and the US Women’s Soccer Team defeated Germany 4-1 and will face Australia at 1 p.m. today.

But Hayes isn't the only one with strong ties to the New Rochelle school to earn the limelight in a quest for gold. According to the school, six members of Gael Nation, both past and present, are participating in this year's games in Paris.

"We’re so proud of how far our Gaels are going," Iona Athletic Director Matthew Glovaski said in a statement. "We’ll be cheering them on and wishing everyone the best of luck in Paris."

Leonard Korir is representing Team USA in Track & Field. Juana Camilion is representing Spain in Women’s Basketball and Maël Gouyette will compete for France in Track & Field.

Other members of the Iona community are taking on high profile broadcasting duties at the Paris Summer Olympics 2024.

Two members of Iona’s Media and Strategic Communications Department were selected to participate in key production roles at the event. Joining the athletes in Paris are Nico Laveris and Bruce Beck.

Beck, an Executive-in-Residence at Iona, is anchoring with WNBC. Laveris will work on production at the games, according to the university.
