Water Rescue Saves Man From Train Station Tunnel As Tide Comes In

The man screaming for help from the waters of the Hudson River under the Yonkers train station was running out of time as rescuers arrived.

YONKERS, NY — Officials are crediting a dramatic water rescue effort with saving the life of a man who found himself stranded in the waters of the Hudson River under the Yonkers train station.

At around 1 p.m. on Saturday, Yonkers Police Department and Yonkers Fire Department units responded to the Yonkers train station on reports of someone screaming for help from the Hudson River.

The rescued man was brought back to dry land and taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia. (YPD)

Police could hear a man yelling for help from the tunnel under the train station that runs between Van Der Donck Park and the outlet to the Hudson River. The Yonkers Police Department Emergency Service Unit quickly grabbed their water rescue equipment and entered the tunnel from the river side, while Yonkers Fire Department personnel entered the tunnel from the park side.

After wading in complete darkness, police eventually found the man clinging to a rock in 6 feet of water as high tide rolled in. The man was brought back to dry land and taken to the hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

"Great work by all involved," Yonkers police said in a statement on social media, praising the efforts of the rescuers. "Please remember to be safe on the many waterways in and around Yonkers."
