Unique Unified Sports At Iona Prep Heads To Training Camp With Giants

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — At Iona Prep sports is an opportunity for everyone to come together to strive for excellence, no matter the individual athlete's natural gifts or special needs.

Now, a program conceived to bridge those differences for a common goal has captured the attention of sports heroes at the top of their game.

Iona Preparatory students have been spending their summer offering social and athletic opportunities to youth who are traditionally excluded from sports circles through the Unified at Iona Prep Program. The program brings together students with and without special needs in basketball, football, kickball and soccer Unified at Iona Prep aims to provide a welcoming team environment that promotes promotes physical health and social inclusion.

On July 28, members of the program had the opportunity to attend a New York Giants Summer Training Camp practice at Quest Diagnostic Training Center in East Rutherford.

Students met players, including tight end Daniel Bellinger and cornerback Tre Hawkins III, along with New York Giants CEO and Iona Prep alumnus John Mara who came over after practice to recognize members of Unified at Iona Prep.

The school in New Rochelle and the Giants organization have a longstanding deep connection. Giants stars, past and present, are frequent guests of honor at the schools annual father and son breakfast. The main athletics field at Iona Prep is named in memory of Mara’s father, Wellington T. Mara.
