Boilermakers Union To Recruit Apprentices

Residents of the Hudson Valley, Long Island and New York City may apply.

NEW YORK — The boilermakers union will conduct a recruitment drive from June 20 to May 15, 2023 for five boilermaker/construction apprentices who are residents of the Hudson Valley, Long Island or New York City.

Applications can be obtained between 9 a.m. and noon on the third Monday of each month during that time from the Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Boilermakers Northeastern Area, Local Union No. 5, Zone No. 5. The office is located at 24 Van Siclen Ave., Floral Park, New York.

The JACT requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old. Proof of age will be required after selection or at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required after selection or at the time of enrollment in apprenticeship.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from remote worksites and required classes at the approved school.
  • Must pass a drug and alcohol test, at the expense of the sponsor, within 48 hours of signing the apprenticeship agreement.

They must also attest in writing that they are physically able to perform the work of a Boilermaker (Construction), which may include being continually on your feet for an 8-hour day; and lifting and carrying weights in excess of 95 pounds for extended periods. They also must attest that they can handle:

  • Extended periods of extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Restricted or confined spaces.
  • Heights of 20 feet or more on scaffolds or platforms.
  • In ditches or trenches up to 20 feet deep.
  • Working in nuclear facilities.
  • Working in hazardous conditions.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
