Cuomo Bridge Crash Creates Traffic Chaos On Nearby Roadways

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area in central Nyack on Rte. 59 and surrounding streets, if possible.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY —Because of an accident on the Gov. Mario Cuomo Bridge, traffic on surrounding streets has become gridlocked, according to police.

Central Nyack is experiencing extremely heavy traffic on Rt 59 and surrounding streets, officials report. Local police are asking motorists to please avoid the area until further notice.

According to NYSDOT, a crash this morning blocked the right lane on I-87 - NYS Thruway southbound before Exit 10 (I-87) in South Nyack. A disabled vehicle on the bridge has added to the congestion. According to Rockland Fires, a truck carrying a container struck the overpass and the container fell off the truck and a vehicle crashed into the container. The container has since been removed, but major delays heading into Westchester County continue.

Drivers are reporting delays of two hours or more crossing the span over the Hudson River. GPS services, including Waze, Google Maps and Apple Maps are in many cases redirecting drivers to the George Washington Bridge.
