DEC Monitoring Stream Cleanup In Piermont

The state's environmental agency said the minimal amount of oil should cause no long-term impacts.

PIERMONT, NY — The New York State Department of Environmental Protection began monitoring a reported sheen on a stream near the Piermont Bridge on May 18, DEC officials said.

Rockland County Hazmat set up booms and contained recoverable sheen in the stream. It was primarily identified as pond scum with a very small amount of petroleum mixed in, DEC officials said.

DEC’s investigation into a potential source of the oil led to a nearby private property in the village of Piermont, officials said. DEC is working with the owner and their remediation contractor on additional cleanup actions to ensure the protection of public health and the environment, officials said.
