Did you go to school at the Palisades School House?

The Palisades School house (currently Palisades Community Center) is turning 150 years old. We are collecting stories and photos!

The old Palisades School House built in 1870, is turning 150 years old. The two room school house, still standing today, held grades K-6 from 1870-1935 when the brick school across the street was built. As the population grew after 1935 and space was limited in the brick building, when needed, kindergarten and sixth grade were taught in the school until 1970. It was active as a school for 100 years until 1970, when all the neighborhood schools closed up and children went to the newly built Tappan Zee Elementary on RT 9W in Piermont. At that time, the school district sold the school house to the Palisades Community for $1 and it became the Palisades Community Center. Over the years, the building has remained the same and efforts to restore it have been its primary goal.

A 150th Birthday Party celebration will be held on Saturday, May 9 in the school house located in the Palisades Community Center at 675 Oak Tree Road in Palisades, NY.

Stories, memories and photos are currently being collected in effort to capture the history of a long ago time. Those who attended school there or had children or parents who attended there, are encouraged to e-mail stories, memories and photos to [email protected]
