NYACK, NY — The Nyack Fresh Market is almost ready for business, and residents will even have a chance to check it out before the grand opening.

"We're going to do a soft opening on the 20th and a grand opening on the 25th," owner Wilson Burmeo told Patch. "We want to check that all the systems are working well for when we do the grand opening!"

The Nyack Fresh Market is on Main Street, in the old Helen Hayes theater.

Right now, the closest supermarkets are out of town on Route 59. That means that even in a village known for its ambience and walkability, residents who don't have cars have had to take cabs or buses or carpool to do their grocery shopping.

"This is going to be their home store, this isn't Stop & Shop," Burmeo said. "Everything is going to be high quality. If it's cheap, it's not going to last. I want to bring quality, decent prices, and my main thing is service."

The staff — Nyack Fresh Market has been hiring for months — has been working on everything from shelving to decor. It's already looking very different from 10 days ago, when Burreo offered this video tour of the work in progress on the market's Facebook page.

Now they're focusing on bringing in the fresh foods, the produce section, the meats and cheeses. "The deli's going to be cooking on Sunday," he said.

Burmeo knows the grocery business well, having worked in supermarkets and then opening two himself elsewhere in Rockland County, including in Spring Valley. He also is the new owner of the Mount Ivy Diner.

"I appreciate the different communities in Rockland," he said.

The New City resident emigrated from Ecuador in 1995. "I've lived here for 27 years," he said. "I love Rockland."

Check out the market at 117 Main St.
