The Ossining High School Marching Band has been honored with a prestigious invitation to perform in the 2024 Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade this December, a national event commemorating one of the most significant moments in American history. The band’s selection was announced by the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade Committee, the State of Hawaii, and the City of Honolulu, recognizing Ossining’s ensemble as an “outstanding ensemble which has a history of performance excellence as well as students who represent the spirit of American youth and good citizenship.”

Under the direction of Mr. Rodrigo Vargas, the Ossining High School Marching Band will play a pivotal role in the parade’s opening ceremony as part of the Mass Band led by the Marine Forces Pacific Band. Following this prestigious honor, the band will march in the official Parade on Kalakaua Avenue, joining other distinguished groups in the nation's largest and most significant Pearl Harbor Anniversary Commemoration.

“The opportunity for our students to participate in the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade is an incredible honor that reflects their talent and deep commitment to honoring our nation's history through music,” said Kate Mathews, Director of Cultural Arts. “However, we are keenly aware of the financial challenge this presents for many of our families. We are committed to ensuring that every student who wishes to participate can do so, regardless of their financial situation.”

To help make this dream a reality, the district is launching a fundraising campaign aimed at offsetting the costs of travel, accommodation, and participation fees. The district is reaching out to local businesses and community members for monetary donations or in-kind contributions for a Silent Auction. All proceeds from these efforts will directly benefit the Ossining Marching Band’s students, ensuring they can partake in this unforgettable experience.

“This is not just a performance; it’s a moment in history that our students will carry with them for the rest of their lives,” said Rodrigo Vargas, Ossining High School Marching Band Director. “We are immensely proud of what our band has achieved, and with the support of our community, we look forward to representing Ossining on this national stage.”

In recognition of the generosity of donors, the district will acknowledge all contributions in the program for the upcoming Benefit Concert, scheduled for September 27, 2024. This community event will serve as a key fundraising effort to support the band’s journey to Hawaii.
