Join us for a talk by historian and journalist Dr. Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos on her compelling portrait of Sarah Kidd in The Pirate’s Wife: The Remarkable True Story of Sarah Kidd. Before he was executed in 1701, Captain William Kidd was one of the most notorious privateers on the seas. But few know of his wife Sarah, whose life is a lesson in survival, resilience, and resourcefulness. Operating within the structures of polite society in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century New York and the limitations placed on women, Sarah aided and abetted her husband, fighting alongside him against his accusers: she helped construct the narration he presented in his defense, ensured he was taken care of in jail, tirelessly worked to help secure a pardon, and even tried to help plot an escape. Dr. Geanacopoulos offers a fascinating glimpse into the golden age of piracy from the perspective of a historical figure who navigated tragic and turbulent events, managing to always find her own agency within the oppressive structures of colonial America.

Each year the Mid Island Dahlia Society (MIDS) hosts a Dahlia Exhibition Show for two days in September to display the best blooms grown by growers in the tri-state area. The show is an official American Dahlia Society (ADS) event where blooms are judged and prizes awarded. 
This event is always one of the most beautiful shows the association participates in and is a major event for the Mid Island Dahlia Society.
Visit the Show from 1 pm - 5 pm on Saturday September 14.

Raynham Hall Museum is holding a ‘Revolutionary Revel!’ on Sunday, September 15 from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. History lovers (and the history curious) will interact with members of the Order of the Ancient and Honorable Huntington Militia’s encampment and learn about 18th-century crafts such as weaving and fabric dyeing. Live musical instrument demonstrations (such as violin, viola da gamba, and recorders), musket firings, historic games, and more will engage people of all ages. You can even interact with the museum’s new AI George Washington!
While event hosts will be dressed in historic clothing, guests can outfit themselves in period attire and preserve the memory at a selfie station. Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in their own period items. The festivities are free and open to the public, including admission to the Education Center and museum, but donations are appreciated, and refreshments will be available for free.
The Huntington Militia is a colonial living history re-enactment group that traces its roots back to Huntington’s founding in 1653 and is the official ceremonial guard of the Town of Huntington.

Josh Gondelman is a writer and comedian who incubated in Boston before moving to New York City, where he currently lives and recently worked as the head writer and an executive producer for Desus &amp; Mero on Showtime. Gondelman also contributed to the final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which was a thrill for both him and his parents. Prior to that, he spent five years at Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, first as a web producer and then as a staff writer where he earned four Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, and three WGA Awards.&nbsp;

Friends of the Bay will be partnering with the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary for the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day, the world's largest coordinated beach cleanup.
It will be held on Saturday, September 21st from 9 am to 12 pm.
Volunteers may choose to come to either Centre Island Beach or Stehli Beach. Pre-registration is required&nbsp;at www.friendsofthebay.org/volunteer-opportunities.
We recommend bringing reusable work gloves to cut down on waste but disposable gloves and bags will be provided. 
Community service certificates will be available.
