Temperatures will drop nearly 30 degrees on Long Island Thursday night as a strong cold front approaches the region and there's even a chance for the first snowflakes of the season, the National Weather Service says.

Rain is likely Thursday evening and will continue falling until the early morning hours of Friday.

"The rain may mix with and change to snow at the very end tonight," the weather service says. "The best chances for snow will be away from the coast and at the higher elevations."

Temperatures will fall into the low-30s overnight and then they will struggle to hit 40 degrees on Friday, more than 15 degrees below normal for this time of year. It will remain cold until more seasonable temperatures return on Sunday.

The coldest weather of the season is likely next Tuesday night and it's also when we will get our next chance of snow as a storm tracks up the coast.
