PEEKSKILL, NY — Members of the City of Peekskill Police Department are mourning the loss of K-9 Officer Charlie who died of injuries sustained in an accident Saturday.

K-9 Charlie, a German shepherd, was the first active-duty K-9 officer Peekskill has had in more than two decades, according to a statement on Facebook.

In 2017, when the K-9 unit was redeployed, K-9 Charlie got the unit off to an amazing and well-respected start, officials said, with his sharp multidisciplinary skills.

Charlie and his handler and partner Officer Anthony Nappi contributed to many successful operations, from tracking to evidence recovery.

Officials said the team allowed for the closing of cases that would otherwise have remained unsolved or not prosecuted due to missing evidence.
