Two of Hendrick Hudson High School’s multi-sport senior student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to play women’s lacrosse at the Division I level.

Fiona McGovern and Kira Varada, both members of the Class of 2021, signed their letters during the NCAA early signing period. McGovern will be joining the women’s lacrosse team at St. Bonaventure University in St. Bonaventure, New York, and Varada will be joining the Iona College women’s lacrosse team in New Rochelle.

McGovern has been a starter on the varsity team since she was an eighth grader. The five-year starter has also lettered in fall and winter cheerleading at HHHS and was recognized as a National Cheerleader’s Association All American. On the lacrosse field, McGovern is a two-time All-League and All-Section Honorable Mention player. At her attack position, the high-scorer has been a vital part of the school’s lacrosse program and the team’s success as a< ection One contender the past few years.

Varada has also been a mainstay on the varsity lacrosse team, also starting since eighth grade. The multi-sport athlete has also lettered in basketball and soccer. Varada was a member of the Section One All-Tournament team when the Sailors captured the Class A basketball championship in March. On the soccer field, Varada holds the school’s single-season scoring record, with 27 goals in one season. At her midfield position in lacrosse, the three-time All-League and two-time All-Section player has been a dominant force for the Sailors.

Athletic Director Tom Baker, on hand for the signing ceremony, said, “Fiona and Kira have not only been tremendous contributors to the lacrosse program here at Hendrick Hudson, but as multi-sport athletes, they will be leaving tremendous legacies for the school’s athletic department and the Hen Hud community at large.”

He added that both students had transcended into outstanding leaders in the school district. “Over the past few years, their efforts on the lacrosse field have correlated into us becoming perennial contenders for a sectional championship. I am very proud of their efforts, and I am truly looking forward to seeing their contributions at their respective schools.”
