PEEKSKILL/CORTLANDT, NY — Independence Day is fast approaching, so it's time to find out where you can celebrate in and around town. Area events include fireworks, festivals and other Fourth of July fun.

To help you fit it all in your 4th of July calendar, Patch has put together a guide to what's going on throughout Westchester County.

July 4 Festivities for 2024

Peekskill: Fourth of July schedule, Tuesday, July 4. Kickoff at 10:30 a.m. Peekskill Volunteer Fire Association in downtown Peekskill. Parade route is Crompond Road to South Division Street, First Street, Union Ave., South Street, North Division, Main Street, North Broad Street, ending at the Central Fire House. Croton-on-Hudson: July 4th Revolutionary War Living History Presentation. July 4, 10 a.m. - noon. Van Cortlandt Manor, 525 S. Riverside Ave. Find more information here.

Dobbs Ferry: July 4, Thomas Cullen Picnic in the Park, 3 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Games, music, carnival. Fireworks at 9 p.m. Parking at waterfront lot on July 4 will be for Dobbs Ferry residents only.

Greenburgh: July 20, Celebrate Greenburgh Day. A.F. Veteran Park, 11 Olympic Lane, Ardsley. Rides, food, fun, entertainment. $7 pool entrance all day. Fireworks at 9 p.m. Rain date is July 21.

Harrison: July 3, Oakland Ave. downtown. House Arrest (pop/dance band) at 7 p.m. Fireworks at 9:15 p.m. (Rain date for fireworks is July 7.) Mister Softee and Latusion food trucks.

Hastings-on-Hudson: 4th of July Kayaking Celebration with NY Paddle Destinations. 6:30 p.m. "A scenic sunset paddle, a delicious BBQ, and a front-row seat to the fireworks display stretching from NYC to Tarrytown." Full details and tickets, here.

Irvington: July 4, 9 p.m., Matthiessen Park (rain date is July 5)

Katonah: July 4, 8 p.m. Caramoor's Pops & Patriots. Westchester Symphonic Winds annual tribute with program including The Star Spangled Banner, Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, and Sousa's The Stars and Stripes Forever. Fireworks return this summer. Find out more here.

Larchmont: The Dixie Dandies will be playing July 4, at 7 p.m. in Manor Park. Fireworks will be visible all along the Long Island Sound. No food/drinks allowed.

Lewisboro: Lewisboro Town Pool Celebration, July 4, 2 p.m. - 6 p.m., Free for pool members; For residents: $18 adult/$12 child. Find more information here.

Mamaroneck: The 50th Annual Blessing of the Fleet's Parade of Ships in the West Basin will be on July 4, at noon. The awards ceremony will start at 1 p.m. Find more information here. The Fireworks Display in Harbor Island Park will take place on July 4, after sunset, around 9:15 p.m./9:30 p.m. (Rain date is July 5.) Excelsior Symphony Orchestra Concert at 8 p.m., before the fireworks. The Firemen's Carnival will take place each evening, from June 27 through July 6, in Harbor Island Park. Mount Vernon: July 4, 10:30 a.m. St. Paul's Church. The annual Independence Day celebration, featuring a reading of the Declaration of Independence and tolling, 13 times, of the historic St. Paul's church bell. Find more information here.

• July 4: Celebrate the July 4th holiday with a viewing of the grand fireworks display at the New Rochelle waterfront. Produced and sponsored by the famous Grucci family, the City of New Rochelle’s annual "Spark the Sound" extravaganza will start at 9 p.m., rain or shine. Optimum viewing from Hudson Park.
• Echo Bay Yacht Club July 4th Celebration, Dinner, Drinks, Music, Fireworks Show. "Come out to the island for some old-fashioned fun! Homemade baked goods contest, tug o' war, horseshoes." 1st boat leaves dock at New Rochelle Marina at 2:30 p.m., runs every 30 minutes. Bring lawn chairs, blankets. Find out more here.

Ossining: RiverJam 2024 on Fridays start July 3. Concerts on July 3 only are at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., followed by fireworks. Live music, food trucks, craft beverages. Louis Engel Waterfront Park. Find more information here.

Port Chester: The 2024 Fireworks Celebration on July 4 will take place at Port Chester H.S. Doors will open for performance at 7 p.m. Fireworks at 9 p.m. Special performance by The Saints Brigade.

Rye:

• Rye Historical Society & Leaders of Tomorrow commemorating July 4th with Revolutionary Rye 250 Celebration. "An entertaining and educational program filled with drama, songs and community." 10 a.m. Library Steps, Village Green & Square House, 1 Purchase St.; 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Guided Tours of the Square House Inn & Tavern Museum. • July 4th Beach Party at the Barley Beach House. 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. Bring a beach chair or blanket to watch fireworks from the beach. There will also be live music, a chicken roast, a cash bar, an island buffet, Hawaiian dancers and a fireshow. Find out more information and buy tickets here.

Scarsdale:

• July 4th celebration at the Scarsdale Pool with picnicking, carnival attractions, music, and aquatic activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be a D.J., bounce house for kids, face painting and swim races and pool noodle races for prizes.
• Greenacres Neighborhood Association celebration on July 4, 9 a.m. - noon
• Arthur Manor Neighborhood Association Independence Day parade on July 4, 9:45 a.m. Starts at corner of Bell & Sprague Roads, ends at Davis Park, where there will be a ceremony, speakers, awards, games and refreshments.

Somers: Independence Day Celebration for Somers residents & guests. July 3. 5 p.m. until fireworks at end. Basketball tournament, hot dog eating contest, Somers Lions bbq, concession stand, activities for kids and adults, town-sponsored axe throwing. Reis Park, 82 Primrose St., Katonah. Tarrytown: July 4th Celebration at Pierson Park, July 4. (Rain date is July 5.) From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., there will be food trucks, featuring Cousin's Maine Lobster, Wanna Empanada and more. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. there will be a kids fun zone with face painting, glitter tattoos, and a bouncy castle. Live music will be from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., with KickStart Charlie. Fireworks will begin after dark. Fireworks may be seen from any of the village parks in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. Heavy traffic is expected and parking is limited.

Tuckahoe: "13th of July." Parkway Oval Field, Bronx Street. 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Rain date is July 14. Food vendors, entertainment. Fireworks by Special DX Wizard Inc. at dusk.

Valhalla: The Westchester County Music Fest and Fireworks, Kensico Dam Plaza, Valhalla, Monday, July 3. Pre-concert entertainment starts at 5 p.m.; fireworks, about 9:15 p.m. Tailgate party at Clove Road Field from 6:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Find more information here.

Yonkers: 4th of July Fireworks by Grucci on the downtown waterfront. Music at 7 p.m. Fireworks at 9 p.m.

Today, Americans celebrate the birth of a new nation with fireworks, parades, concerts, and family gatherings and barbecues. Celebrations, though, predate by centuries the designation of Independence Day as a federal holiday, which didn’t happen until 1941.

During the pivotal summer of 1776, the pre-Revolutionary celebrations honoring King George III’s birthday were replaced with mock funerals as a symbolic break from the crown.

It was an exciting time in Philadelphia — the Continental Congress voted to break from the crown and, two days later on July 4, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the original 13 colonies — New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland. Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia — to adopt the Declaration of Independence.

The first annual commemoration of the nation’s independence was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, while the Revolutionary War was ongoing. Fireworks have been part of Fourth of July festivities since the first celebration in Philadelphia.
