HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Your eyes are not deceiving you: Gas prices have been creeping up the closer we get to Memorial Day.

The seasonal surge in gasoline demand leading to the long holiday weekend, according to the AAA, resulted in the average price nationally for a gallon of gas going up 4 cents since last week to $3.57 as of Friday.

AAA is forecasting that road trips over the Memorial Day weekend will be up 6 percent over last year, with more than 37 million Americans driving to their destinations.

The demand for gas is helping to push pump prices, said AAA spokesman Andrew Gross.

“But the increase is mitigated by the low cost of oil, which is wobbling around in the low $70s per barrel,” he said. “Pump prices could stabilize or fall once this long weekend is in the rearview mirror.”

In New York, the average price of a gallon of regular gas as of Friday is $3.69. That is up a penny from Thursday, and up 4 cents from a week ago.

That is certainly better than it was a year ago, when it cost an average of $4.93 for a gallon of gas in New York.

Here are the average prices for a gallon of gas around the Hudson Valley:

  • Columbia County: $3.66
  • Dutchess County: $3.73
  • Orange County: $3.66
  • Putnam County: $3.76
  • Rockland County: $3.77
  • Ulster County: $3.63
  • Westchester County: $3.79
