PEEKSKILL, NY — The Paramount stage will come alive Friday, Sept. 6 to honor Paul Robeson. Feature appearances will include Guy Davis, Akua Dixon, the Wallace Roney Quintet, Steven Herring, Antonio Ciacca, Craig Holiday Haynes, Erik Contzius with special guests: Jeffrey Deskovic and Buddy Glassberg.

The celebration event marks 70 years since Paul Robeson’s September 4, 1949 concert in Peekskill. Paul Robeson was an exceptional artist, scholar, athlete, and social justice advocate. His enormous and wide-ranging talents made him one of the most popular Americans of his time and he used his celebrity status to challenge the social and economic status quo, creating a positive change in society on an international level.

He sang about it in his resounding bass-baritone voice and spoke about it with stirring compassion. Today the famed singer is still a motivating figure and a reminder of the strength within our diverse community.

The Paul Robeson Celebration committee would like to see the City of Peekskill’s Paramount Theatre be run by a community centric not-for-profit organization known as the Paul Robeson Center for The Arts. This organization would build upon the public’s significant investment to date in the Paramount Theatre and preserve the efforts of many dedicated individuals over the last several decades.
