PEEKSKILL, NY — With the Bee-Line's summertime free fares almost over, Westchester County will send its MetroCard Mobile Van to Peekskill Aug. 16 to assist residents interested in buying MetroCards for riding the bus.

The new schedule comes after a temporary suspension due to free fares on all Bee-Line buses through Labor Day, a program started in June to help residents hit by temporarily high prices at the gas pump.

Officials urged residents to take advantage of the free fares and try out the Bee-Line system before the summer deal is over Sept. 5.

"We take great pride in the fact that our buses are safe, clean and accessible. Leave the driving to us and save some money this summer. From Yorktown to Yonkers, we have a robust system that can get you where you need to go," County Executive George Latimer said in May when announcing the free-fare deal.

The Bee-Line Bus System serves more than 27 million passengers annually, connecting residents to jobs, recreation, shopping and other regional transportation services. It is the second-largest transit bus fleet in New York State. More than 65 percent of all Westchester County residents are within walking distance of a Bee-Line bus route. The system has over 3,300 bus stops and almost 60 routes. All Bee-Line buses are accessible, and designed with many accessibility features including "kneeling" buses, ramps and lifts.

The MetroCard Mobile Van, provided by the county’s Department of Transportation in conjunction with the MTA New York City Transit Authority, is making rounds throughout Westchester.

It will be at the Peekskill Library from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on the 16th.

After Labor Day MetroCards can be used on the County’s Bee-Line bus system as well as New York City’s transit system. The MetroCard Mobile Van provides transit riders with a "one-stop shop" for all MetroCard services. In addition, staff will be available to explain rates, discounts and answer any questions.

Regular MetroCards will be available for purchase and existing cards may be refilled. Riders will also be able to apply for reduced rates if they are 65 and older or have qualifying disabilities.
MetroCard is the automated regional fare collection system managed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. For more information on the MetroCard Mobile Van and other MetroCard locations, call the Bee-Line Information Center at (914) 813-7777.
