PEEKSKILL, NY — One of the busiest grade crossings on the Metro-North system is slated for improvements through a $2 million federal grant announced Friday by Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand.

"This grant and implementation will help eliminate vehicle, train, and pedestrian conflicts and will allow more residents, commuters, and visitors alike, to enjoy walking through our city, safely," said Peekskill Mayor Andre Rainey.

Last year, the Hudson Avenue grade crossing was one of seven of Metro-North’s crossing sites to participate in International Level Crossing Awareness Day, a global initiative to promote safe behaviors at or around grade crossings.

It's still going to be a grade crossing. The project will replace and upgrade warning devices and add more accessible pedestrian walkways and gates.

"Rail-grade crossings have been the site of several serious accidents in New York, and this vital federal grant will address that by improving the safety of the Hudson Avenue crossing," Schumer said in the announcement. "I will keep fighting in the Senate to ensure our Hudson Valley communities have the transit funding they need to keep the rails and roads safe."
