Peekskill's Gun Buyback Event Nets Dozens Of Firearms

People were able to turn in weapons — no questions asked — to receive from $25 to $250 in gift cards.

PEEKSKILL, NY — A community gun buyback event Saturday in Peekskill netted 66 firearms.

The event was held at the United Methodist Church in Peekskill, where people surrendered the weapons —with no questions asked — in exchange for cash gift cards.

Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah said that dozens of firearms are now off the streets and out of potentially the wrong hands.

“Gun buybacks are part of my broader gun safety goals intended to reduce gun-involved incidents, including gun suicides,” she said.

Participants were offered money in the form of pre-paid gift cards: $250 for assault rifles, $200 for handguns, $100 for shotguns or rifles and $25 for non-working guns.

Payment was subject to inspection and screening by onsite officials.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office hosted the event, along with the Peekskill NAACP, the Peekskill Police Department and the City of Peekskill.
