HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The first chance for winter-type weather will likely reach parts of the Hudson Valley Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued hazardous weather outlooks for the entire region except for southern Westchester County.

For Columbia, Ulster and Dutchess counties, the first widespread winter weather event of the season is expected Tuesday night and Wednesday, potentially leading to hazardous travel conditions — particularly for the Wednesday morning commute.

Meteorologists said that forecasting precipitation types, their duration and especially amounts will be challenges.

Winter weather advisories will likely be needed across portions of the area. There is also the potential for a winter storm watch or warning across portions of the southern Adirondacks and foothills.

For Orange, Putnam, Rockland and northern Westchester counties, the hazardous outlook says there is a potential for a light accumulation of snow and freezing rain Tuesday night, with the highest probability of accumulation across Orange County.

Precipitation should change to plain rain by daybreak Wednesday. Unfortunately, before then, locally hazardous driving conditions are possible for the early morning commute.

This is part of a weather pattern that is bringing wintry conditions to almost 20 states, AccuWeather meteorologist Nicole LoBiondo said.

“Across the Northeast, temperatures for most of the Interstate 95 corridor will be marginally too high for snow,” she said, “instead, accumulation snow will focus on the interior areas of the region.”

After Tuesday and Wednesday, though, the storm moves out, leaving cold temperatures and mostly clear to clear skies.
