6 Winter Safety Reminders for Port Washington Residents

Port Washington residents are reminded to be a good neighbor following the blizzard that dumped up to two feet of snow on Long Island this past weekend.

For starters, residents and business owners must remove snow from sidewalks. Commercial property owners also must remove snow from around fire hydrants.

“Simply removing your vehicles from the street will allow plows adequate room to operate and prevent cars from being plowed in,” Supervisor Judi Bosworth said in a statement. “In addition, pursuant to the Town Code, the homeowner is responsible to meet several key requirements for snow removal and street clearing. Remember we are all a family here in North Hempstead and the goal is to keep people safe as they travel by car or walk on the sidewalks.”

North Hempstead’s Public Safety Department shared these winter safety reminders and information:

• Under the Town Code, every resident in charge of any property within the Town is required to clear the snow and ice from sidewalks in front their property at least four hours after snow has stopped, except between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
• North Hempstead’s Code Enforcement Department will inspect areas to ensure sidewalks are passable for pedestrians.
• If you are a commercial property owner or the owner of a multi-residential property adjacent to a fire hydrant, you are required under the Town Code to remove snow and ice from around the hydrant for a distance of two feet, and between the sidewalk and curb within four hours after the snowfall has ended, except between 9:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
• If sidewalks are not maintained, tickets will be issued.
• The Town Code also states that businesses must keep handicap parking spots usable for parking purposes.
• Even if a business is closed after the snowstorm, merchants are still responsible for clearing the sidewalks.
