New at Sands Point Preserve: Nighttime Owl Prowl for Adults

Part of a series of programs for ages 16+ at the Guggenheim Estate, where membership helps support the site's buildings and grounds.

Now adults can enjoy nature education programs, designed just for them, thanks to a new series at Sands Point Preserve.

Led by biologist Eric Powers, the adults-only series kicks off Saturday, April 30, at 8 p.m. with a nighttime Owl Prowl for Grownups, geared for those ages 16 and up.

"When I do a family program, adults are just as interested if not more in the presentation,” Powers said. "Some asked, 'do you do this program for the adults?'"'

This year, the answer is yes.

The adult Owl Prowl will include searching for fox, deer, bats and, of course, owls. Powers will deploy new technologies – a bat detector and a thermal imager – to locate wildlife.

The Owl Prowl is the first in a series of adult nature hikes. And while the Owl Prowl begins at 8 p.m., the next sessions start at 11 a.m. Exploration Hike I is set for May 22, when nature enthusiasts will pursue signs of spring and wildlife. And the Wilderness & Suburban Survival hike on June 18 offers basic survival skills that help prepare people for any kind of emergency.

Exploration Hike II takes place July 23 across the Preserve, and includes a look at the historic and medical uses of local plants – with a chance to eat some wild edibles. Signs of Fall Migration is slated for Aug. 20, when adult hikers will view nests, feathers and other avian artifacts before looking for birds heading south for winter. And at Prep for Winter, on Sept. 17, nature lovers will look for signs of migration, hibernation or adaption to the conditions as temperatures begin to drop.

The Adult Nature Programs is just one of many new exciting offerings at Sands Point Preserve. Other new programming includes a Mother’s Day Tea on May 8, and a mat class taught by Evolution Pilates studio founder Mo Wolfe, beginning May 9.
