Zimmerman Declares Victory In NY 3rd Congressional Democratic Primary

Robert Zimmerman, a longtime DNC member from Great Neck, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, according to unofficial results.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Robert Zimmerman has declared victory in the Democratic primary for New York's 3rd Congressional District.

The longtime DNC member and Great Neck businessman, who scored the support of multiple political heavyweights in his bid to represent New York in Congress, made the announcement shortly before 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

In a statement, Zimmerman said: "Our victory tonight proves when Democrats stand together and fight together, we deliver results."

There were five candidates running in the race: Josh Lafazan, a Nassau County legislator; Robert Zimmerman, a longtime Democratic National Committee member from Great Neck; Jon Kaiman, former Town of North Hempstead Supervisor; Melanie D'Arrigo, a nonprofit co-founder from Port Washington; and Reema Rasool, a community organizer from Oyster Bay.

The 3rd Congressional District seat is being vacated by centrist Rep. Tom Suozzi, who unsuccessfully ran for governor.

The winner goes on to face Republican George Santos in the general election in November.

If either Zimmerman or Santos is elected, he will be the first openly gay representative in Congress from Long Island and Queens.

Here are the unofficial election results, as of 8:03 a.m. on Wednesday:

Josh Lafazan: 19.66%
Robert Zimmerman: 35.20%
Jon Kaiman: 25.55%
Melanie D'Arrigo: 15.58%
Reema Rasool: 2.45%
