PWWD and ReWild Third Sustainable Garden Tour Sees Even More Success

Over 140 Residents Participate in Third Annual Tour

The Port Washington Water District (PWWD) and ReWild Long Island recently hosted their third annual Sustainable Garden Tour, a show and tell of sustainable gardening practices used by residents around the community. This year’s event proved to be the biggest success yet, with more than 140 attendees touring 11 different locations. Nine of those locations were homes of Port Washington residents who have transformed their lawns and gardens into native gardens that promote water conservation, sustainability, biodiversity and more.

“To see our Sustainable Garden Tour grow every year is a testament to the enthusiasm that the Port Washington community has for its environment,” said PWWD Commissioner Mindy Germain. “By engaging with the owners of these native gardens, residents are able to take home new ideas on what they can do to make their landscapes more eco-friendly. We are expecting a very hot and dry summer, and water-wise landscaping is one of the tools we are encouraging residents to embrace in our Do It For Port! water conservation campaign. We at the PWWD are always proud to serve this community, but events like this show us that our residents are just as passionate about protecting our environment as we are, making that sense of pride even stronger.”

Each garden on the tour represented a different theme within the sustainable gardening umbrella. On display were gardens that featured bird and pollinator-friendly native plants, strategies to reduce your lawn footprint, composting, organic fruits and vegetables, smart sprinklers and many others. The PWWD’s headquarters served as one of the tour stops for the first time this year, as the District planted a brand new native garden outside their office this spring. The tour remains one of the high points of the PWWD’s Do It For Port! campaign, which aims to help inspire residents of the Port Washington community to protect their water source and educate them on the ways in which they can do so.

“To see the Sustainable Garden Tour grow each year is a pleasure for us and shows our community’s passion for protecting our environment,” said Raju Rajan, President of the Board at ReWild Long Island. “Our hosts show their neighbors that so much can be done to promote biodiversity, save water and support pollinators, even in small spaces. We hope that our attendees were able to take home some ideas on how they can make their gardens and landscapes native, and we are looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!”
