SEE: Humpback Whales-- The New Mascots of Hempstead Harbor

Check out this amazing shot of a humpback whale taken on Wednesday.

A humpback whale was spotted Wednesday right outside Hempstead Harbor and thankfully, a photographer was there to capture the amazing moment.

To no one’s disappointment, humpback whales have been seen in and around the Harbor by the Town’s Bay Constables in recent weeks.

“These whales seem to have adopted our Harbor was their new home,” Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said. “We may have to consider making them the official Town mascot.”

Humpback whales are one of the most commonly seen whales in New York waters despite them being one of the most endangered of the large whales, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reports.

There are only about 2,000 to 4,000 humpback whales left in the western North Atlantic, according to the DEC.
