Town of North Hempstead Vows to Clean up Hempstead Harbor

This announcement is in response to the environmental "report card" of the Long Island Sound.

The Eastern Narrows, which is closest to Port Washington, earned a “D+.”

After hearing about this low grade, Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth vowed to improve the water quality of Hempstead Harbor.

“I am deeply committed and confident that we will attain our mutual goal to restore Hempstead Harbor back to the pristine body of water that it once was, and see it teeming with fish, fowl and shellfish,” Bosworth said in a statement.

While the Inner Harbor’s overall grade was a “D+,” Inner Hempstead Harbor earned a “B+.”

This grade shows that there is still work to be done, according to Bosworth.

“Turning the tide on our water quality doesn’t happen overnight,” she said. “We all know that years of neglect and ignorance took their toll on so many of our waterways. But in recent years the dedication and hard work of so many has begun to change that.”
