WATCH: Beluga Whales in Manhasset Bay

The belugas were spotted Friday morning.

A few people in Port Washington were in for a special surprise Friday morning.

Workers were repairing a dock overlooking Manhasset Bay when they spotted two beluga whales in the water around 7:30 a.m.

Belugas are typically found only in Arctic and subarctic waters, but they occasionally travel south and have been known to show up in the Long Island Sound, according to the Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks & Aquariums.

Town of North Hempstead Chief Bay Constable Mallory Nathan also caught a glimpse of three beluga whales, which were about 8 to 10 feet in length, in the bay Friday morning.

“It was a real thrill to spot the whales and I hope everyone will give them the respect they deserve and the space they need,” Nathan said.

The Town of North Hempstead urges boaters who spot the whales to keep a safe distance so the white whales are not injured by boat propellers.
