WATCH: Humpback Whale Enjoys Long Island Sound Waters

The whale was spotted near the Execution Rocks Lighthouse on Labor Day morning.

Two Port Washington residents were fishing near the Execution Rocks Lighthouse when they noticed something in the water on Monday morning.

Tim Bischoff and Rob Ioanna spotted a humpback whale breaching the surface of the water in the Long Island Sound at 7:30 p.m.

Humpback whales are one of the most commonly seen whales in New York waters despite them being one of the most endangered of the large whales, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reports.

There are only about 2,000 to 4,000 humpback whales left in the western North Atlantic, according to the DEC.

The Execution Rocks Lighthouse in Mamaroneck is located near the border of New Rochelle and Sands Point.
