'The Yacht America' in Manhasset Bay

Learn about the history of this vessel and its patriotic message on this Memorial Day holiday.

You may have noticed a special visitor parked in Manhasset Bay last week, but you might not have known the history behind The Yacht America.

America is a replica of the famed 139-foot yacht that won a race around the Isle of Wight in 1851, defeating the British to win the Royal Yacht Squadron’s “100 Pound Cup.” The trophy was then renamed the America’s Cup, according to The Day.

The America is currently on an eastern seaboard tour that began in the Gulf of Mexico. America headed north to Maine (where it made a pit stop in Manhasset Bay during its journey) and will then head south again to the Caribbean, where it will end its tour in Bermuda in 2017.

The tour began in 2015 when Captain Troy Sears and the America crew made scheduled stops at yacht clubs, ports and other seaside venues along the Pacific coast from San Diego to Vancouver and back again.
