DOBBS FERRY, NY — Efforts to rescue a swimmer in distress in the Hudson River became a recovery late last night, according to public safety officials.

UPDATE: The missing swimmer's body was recovered from the Hudson River on Monday.

"With the help of the Westchester County Police Department and Rockland County Sheriffs Marine Units, along with the assistance of the New York State and New Rochelle Police Dive Teams the missing was located approximately 100 yards south of the last known location in 20ft of water," the Piermont Fire Department Dive Team & Marine Unit said in their most recent update.

The call for help went out and dive teams, rescue boats and air support from up and down the river responded, including New York City, but the effort became a search for a body as the sun set and the tide changed. That search is continuing on Tuesday.

Monday evening, the Piermont Fire Department Dive Team & Marine Unit was requested to neighboring Westchester County to help in the search for the missing swimmer. First responders, including nine divers and four EMTs, responded to the scene by boat.

Once on scene, the Piermont Fire Department Dive Team & Marine Unit was briefed on the last known location of the swimmer and marked the area with a buoy. The team then used
their side scan sonar to start a quick grid pattern before deploying the divers. Within 8-10 minutes of being on scene, two divers were deployed using a grapnel system to search, according to the department.

Over the next 3 hours, the team took turns searching the bottom of the Hudson, but because of a tide change of close to 2-3 knots and the loss of sunlight, the dive operations were called off by the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department.

"Tomorrow morning the dive team will once again respond back out to the last known location of the missing swimmer to continue our efforts to bring the missing back home," Piermont Fire Department said on social media. "Great job by all involved."

The body was recovered around 10 a.m. that morning.

Officials told the Journal News that they believe the person may have been assisting crews to dismantle rides at the Fourth of July carnival at the waterfront park and went into the water to cool off in high temperatures.

Rescuers from Yorktown Heights, Dobbs Ferry, Hastings and Valhalla and the Westchester County Police Marine Unit, were all on site, according to an on the scene report from News 12 Westchester.
