60 MPH Wind, Golf Ball-Size Hail, Tornadoes Possible On LI

Long Island is at an "enhanced risk" for severe thunderstorms Thursday. The remnants of Hurricane Laura arrive this weekend.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Severe weather, including chances for tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds and flash floods, is expected to hit Long Island Thursday.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center placed the region at an enhanced risk for severe thunderstorms.

"Severe thunderstorms are likely with damaging wind gusts of 60 mph or higher, along with large hail as the primary threats," a hazardous weather outlook for the area said. "An isolated tornado is also possible along with brief heavy rainfall."

By the mid-to-late afternoon Thursday, strong storms are expected to pop up to our north and then move southeast through the evening, the weather service said.

The round of storms will end by early Friday, but another chance of showers and thunderstorms will return later that day.

On Saturday, the remnants of Hurricane Laura will hit the area. Up to 2 inches of rain may cause some minor flooding on the island, but no severe damage is expected.

The latest Long Island forecast:

Wednesday Night- A slight chance of showers between 3am and 5am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5am. Increasing clouds, with a low around 65. Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph becoming light after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Thursday- A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 87. Southeast wind 5 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon.

Thursday Night- A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 8pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 8pm and 11pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11pm. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. West wind 6 to 11 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday- A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 89. West wind around 8 mph.

Friday Night- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Saturday- Showers likely, mainly after 9am. The rain could be heavy at times. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night- Showers likely. The rain could be heavy at times. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Sunday- A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81.

Sunday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 61.

Monday- Sunny, with a high near 78.
