Brookhaven Rail Terminal releasing thousands of tons of road salt

Brookhaven Rail Terminal is releasing thousands of tons of road salt from its onsite stockpile to Long Island's municipalities

Having shipped to Long Island by rail thousands of tons of bagged road salt over the last twelve months, Brookhaven Rail Terminal (BRT) is now releasing much of its stockpile to retailers across the region seeking emergency supplies in anticipation of the blizzard now bearing down on Long Island.

Andrew Kaufman, President of the Brookhaven Rail Terminal in Yaphank stated “There has been a steady conga line of trucks taking road salt from our on-site warehouse that was stocked over the past year in anticipation of just such a forecast.”

BRT is the region’s only intermodal freight facility and it processed by rail hundreds of tons of road salt as one rail car can carry more than five times what a single tractor trailer truck can offload. “It was one of the most efficient means of bringing such an enormous amount of needed winter supplies to the island,” Kaufman stated. “Now the stockpile is being pre-positioned for its use after this storm departs Thursday morning. And we are already making plans to replenish that supply through future rail shipments as this is just the beginning of a unpredictable winter.”
