Firefighters Battle Oakdale Vehicle Blaze, Arson Squad Probes: FD

The Suffolk County Arson Squad is investigating a Long Island vehicle blaze extinguished by the West Sayville Fire Department, police say.

SAYVILLE, NY —Suffolk County Police Arson Squad detectives are investigating a fire in Oakdale that engulfed an asphalt truck and a travel trailer RV Friday night, West Sayville Fire Department Chief Patrick D’Onofrio told Patch.

When chiefs arrived on scene at 50 Pond Road around 7:30 p.m., they found a 2019 Zinger travel trailer and a 1999 International truck engulfed in flames and multiple areas of brush on fire, D’Onofrio said.

In addition, firefighters were also met by an exploding propane tank exploded upon arrival while a second propane tank continued leaking with flames nearby, the chief added.

D’Onofrio said it took "around two hours" for firefighters to get the blaze under control.

The Suffolk County Arson Squad is investigating.

"No cause determined at this point," police told Patch.

According to the chief, the Islip Town HazMat team responded to conduct a "controlled burn-off of the leaking propane tank." Mutual aid was provided by the Sayville Fire Department and Community Ambulance Company, D’Onofrio said.
