Firefighter Hospitalized After Battling Blaze In Oakdale: FD

West Sayville Fire Department battled a fire in Oakdale that sent one firefighter to a hospital for observation on Memorial Day.

OAKDALE, NY — The West Sayville Fire Department battled a residential fire in Oakdale that sent one firefighter to an area hospital for observation on Memorial Day, the fire department told Patch.

According to First Assistant Cheif Patrick D'Onofrio, the fire department "was activated" for a residential structure fire on Chateau Drive in Oakdale shortly after 1 a.m. on Monday.

D'Onofrio was first to arrive and found an active fire in the home's detached garage. He told Patch that Chief of Department Brian D'Onofrio later took command of the incident.

"There were no injuries to the residents and one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for observation," he added.

Suffolk County Police Arson Squad detectives and the Islip Town Fire Marshal investigated the fire and determined that the cause was from an electric heater and was deemed non-criminal, police said.

Mutual aid was provided by the East Islip, Sayville, Bohemia, Bayport and Holbrook Fire departments and Sayville Community Ambulance, D'Onofrio said.
