Flood Advisory In Effect For Suffolk County Communities

The NWS is advising certain towns of flooding and heavy rain due to the thunderstorms.

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory for minor flooding in poor drainage areas in western Suffolk County from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

The NWS says the following locations could experience flooding: Islip, Shirley, Medford, Patchogue, Center Moriches, Holbrook, Bay Shore, Sayville, Mastic, Yaphank, East Patchogue, North Bay Shore, East Islip, North Bellport and Bohemia.

Flooding may take place in urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots, the NWS says. Doppler radar says there will be heavy rain due to thunderstorms. The NWS says one half to an inch of rain has already fallen and additional rainfall up to one half inch is likely.

An advisory for thunderstorms over waters was also issued for the Great South Bay and East End waters around noon. Expect lightning strikes and heavy downpours. Boaters should seek safe harbor until these storms pass.

  • Great South Bay around 11:40 a.m.
  • Moriches Inlet around noon
  • Moriches Bay around 12:05 p.m.
  • Westhampton Beach around 12:10 p.m.
  • Shinnecock Inlet around 12:25 p.m.
  • Great Peconic Bay, Mattituck Inlet and Chinnecock Bay aroudn 12:30 p.m.
  • Little Peconic Bay around 12:40 p.m.
  • Shelter Island around 12:45 p.m.
