LONG ISLAND, NY — The snow started a bit later than expected on Long Island Thursday morning, sparing commuters a rough ride, but the evening commute could be another story.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. About 2 inches of snow is likely to accumulate across the island.

"Snow should wind down most elsewhere between 12-1 p.m., hanging on until 2 p.m. across the forks of Long Island," the weather service said.

A couple inches of snow may not be much, but combine it with temperatures dropping into the 20s by the evening and icy roadways become a big concern.

The snow is falling atop already wet ground, which could make for very slippery conditions on untreated roadways.

"The other concern is that any untreated roads and surfaces could become icy as any standing water may freeze or snow that initially melted may freeze," the weather service said.

Looking ahead, there's no longer a snow threat for the weekend with the next chance of snow coming next Tuesday night.
