Obituary: ​James Bast, 9/11 First Responder, Dies At 49

The retired NYPD sergeant from Sayville passed away on January 14, 2020.

SAYVILLE, NY — James P. Bast, of Sayville, died on January 14, 2020. He was 49.

Bast was born and raised in Forest Hills. He graduated from Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School.

He worked for more than 23 years with the NYPD before retiring as a Sergeant Special Assignment. More recently, he worked on Michael Bloomberg’s private security team.

Bast was a 9/11 first responder, a member of the Sergeant’s Benevolent Association, and an active coach in several youth sports programs for his three children.

He is survived by his wife, Kristin and his three children, James, Thomas and Megan.

In addition, he is survived by his mother, JoAnn Bast of Oakdale; two brothers, William and his wife Regina of Great River and Brian and his wife Andrea of Oakdale; as well as his mother and father-in-law, Cheryl and Eugene Milmoe of Sayville and his sister-in-law, Jennifer Kenwell of Palm Beach, Florida.

Bast was predeceased by his father, William.

A visitation was held on Thursday, January 16 and Friday, January 17 at the Raynor & D'Andrea Funeral Homes in West Sayville.

A funeral was held on Saturday, January 18 at the St. John Nepomucene RC Church in Bohemia.

Bast was buried at the St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
