A storm system that has killed at least seven people across the country has the potential to cause problems for the Monday morning commute on Long Island.

Tornado watches were in effect in several states Sunday night, but the worst of the weather is expected to remain west of the island.

"As a cold front moves through, the potential for damaging winds will be possible, in addition to heavy rainfall and localized urban and poor drainage flooding," the National Weather Service says. "Expect a slow Monday morning commute as the front moves through the region."

Minor urban and poor drainage flooding is the main threat for Long Island.

"You can figure the roughest weather with downpours and possible thunderstorms will be from about 3am to 9am Monday morning from west to east as the line of thunderstorms moves through," Joe Cioffi, a meteorologist for WPIX-TV and FiOS1 News, says on his website.

A dense fog advisory is also in effect for the entire island, except for northern Nassau County, until 6 a.m. Monday. Limited visibilities of a quarter mile or less at times will make travel very difficult, the NWS says.
