Sayville Memorial Day Parade Set For May 30

Residents can come out and support the groups marching, and then take part in the unveiling of two new monuments.

SAYVILLE, NY — After a two year hiatus, Sayville will celebrate Memorial Day on May 30 with a parade through the town, followed by a ceremony.

The Sayville Memorial Day Parade, which is sponsored by the Sayville Fire Department ,will kick off at 9 a.m. starting at Handsome Ave. and ending at the Sayville Firehouse.

Immediately following the parade at 10 a.m., the American Legion Post 651 will hold a "very poignant" wreath dedication ceremony at Sparrow Park on Main Street.

The ceremony will unveil two new monuments for the Iraq/Afghanistan War and Persian Gulf War.

The Greater Sayville Chamber raised up to $5,000 in an online fundraiser to pay for the monuments, as well as for maintenance costs for other veterans memorials in the community.

"It has truly been an honor for our Saville Chamber to work hand in hand with the American Legion Post 651 in Sayville to assist in obtaining these monuments in order to memorialize and represent all the servicemen and servicewomen who have served in all branches of the United States Armed Forces," said Eileen Tyznar, president of the Greater Sayville Chamber.
