SAYVILLE, NY — A new "painted piano" in Sayville Village is meant to be played, not just admired. The new public piano concept was the brainchild of local music teacher Jack Licitra and his students. The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce helped bring the concept to fruition, and the interactive public piano made its debut Thursday night at Five Points Cafe.

Licitra lives in Sayville and teaches music at South Bay Arts Pharmacy music school in Bayport. He told Patch the piano's debut on Thursday was "a great night."

"We had kids playing from its landing at 1 p.m. all the way until 9 p.m."

The piano will be at Mini Monet in Sayville Friday afternoon from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. There will be an "open mic" for kids from 4 to 5 p.m. The piano will return periodically for future live events in Sayville, to continue to inspire the youngest passers-by.

Licitra reflected on his goals for the painted piano:

"To give kids a way to see that the whole world's a stage and to encourage and inspire them to share their talents or maybe start learning and see how fun music and art can be."
