Swimming Banned at Lake Ronkonkoma Beach...Again

Bacteria levels in the lake exceed state standards, health officials say.

Lake Ronkonkoma Beach is closed to swimmers once again due to the finding of bacteria at levels that exceed New York State standards.

The beach was closed on June 24 for the same reason. It re-opened last week before the latest ban was announced by county health officials on Monday.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in water contaminated with bacteria can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
