3 Injured In Head-On Flanders Crash

The road was closed for an hour and a half while police investigated the serious crash, authorities said.

FLANDERS, NY — Three people were injured in a head-on crash in Flanders Monday, police said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the crash took place at 2:27 p.m. on Flanders Road near Bay Avenue. Edward Sorensen, 77, of Southampton was driving a 2016 Subaru westbound with one passenger, Gearlyn O’Brien, 57, also of Southampton, when he collided with Jamel Mercer, 25, of Riverhead, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala eastbound, police said. Mercer apparently crossed over into Sorensen’s lane, striking the Subaru, police said.

Sorensen and O’Brien were transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Mercer was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center, police said.

Flanders-Northampton Volunteer Ambulance and fire department responded along with Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance Corps and New York State Police.

The road was closed between Bay Avenue and Pleasure Drive for one-and-a-half hours for the investigation but has since reopened.
