Appreciating the Ocean and Bays in the Hamptons

They deserve a round of applause for this last season.

With the last trappings of a great summer slipping away as the temperature starts that slowly slide down to much cooler weather it’s time to talk about the many beaches of the Hamptons.

How does one even begin to measure the joy and peace so many have experienced on the sands and in the water this last summer? Anyone who lives within a short bike ride or walk from an Atlantic Ocean, or bay beach understands how special it is to have such a mighty resource close.

After 9/11 and a painful divorce I landed on the east end for a weekend that turned into the rest of life type of situation. I either sail, swim or walk along a bay or ocean beach almost daily. The swimming and walking I owe to my wife Cindi, who reintroduced me to swimming. In fact I lived 450 ft. from the sands of Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk for almost 4 years and went swimming but twice. (Although I did walk with my dog along the shore for many sunrises, sunsets and moonlit experiences.)

The treasure of having the ocean so near is a pleasure that really can’t be measured. It’s healing powers manifest themselves when one just walks the beach and feels that ocean breeze, hears those ocean waves, and looks out and see’s that forever view.

I just want to say I appreciate what the oceans and bays do for me, and so many others. The beaches bring smiles, joys, and a revisit to our youth, when a day at the beach was pure heaven. I suggest you go visit the ocean or bays before that mighty “North Wind” begins to blow bringing in winter. Quite frankly it’s the best natural medicine there is. I always think/know that since there was men and women on this earth, they walked the ocean and felt the way we do as we walk along a beach.
