Dune Road Storm Damage; Limited State Of Emergency Declared: Supervisor

Sand is being moved to re-nourish the berm and prevent a possible breach, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman says.

SOUTHAMPTON, NY —Damage to Dune Road due to Hurricane Jose impacts led Southampton Town officials to declare a limited state of emergency, according to Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman.

There were several washovers of Dune Road early Tuesday and the state of emergency allows the town to move sand to renourish the berm, preventing further erosion and the possibility of a breach, Schneiderman said.

The Suffolk County Department of Public Works and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have been notified, and the Southampton Town Highway Department is moving approximately 500 yards of sand from their stockpile in Westhampton, the supervisor said.

The affected area is located between the Ponquogue Bridge and the Shinnecock Inlet.

The storm may also cause flooding problems along low lying inland waterways, Schneiderman said.
