Police said Eleazer, of Southampton, was crossing the road when he was struck. The road was closed for two hours for the investigation, police said, and the vehicle was impounded for a safety check.

Eleazer was a member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation, sources said.

According to Southampton Town Police Sgt. Michael Joyce, the accident took place at 10:30 p.m. on County Road 39 and Tuckahoe Lane, when a female motorist, 26, driving a 2014 Chevrolet Cruz and heading west struck Eleazer, a pedestrian in the road, police said.

He was transported to Southampton Hospital by Southampton Ambulance and pronounced dead, Joyce said.

No charges were filed in the accident, Joyce said.

The investigation is ongoing.
