Healthy Kids Day Returns to the YMCA East Hampton RECenter

The Free Community Event Aims to Encourage Children to be Physically Active and Bring Families Together

The YMCA of Long Island announced today that the 30th Annual Healthy Kids Day will officially return to the YMCA East Hampton RECenter on Saturday, April 30. The free community event will feature an assortment of healthy activities and excitement for the whole family including games, a bouncy castle, family yoga and dance classes, gardening for kids workshops and arts & crafts projects. The events are open to the public so families throughout Long Island can enjoy an afternoon of fun, safe, supervised activities that celebrate healthy lifestyles.

“Healthy Kids Day is central to the YMCA’s mission of inspiring kids in our communities to live healthy and active lives,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of YMCA of Long Island. “Just 60 minutes of physical activity every day could help prevent serious health problems associated with obesity. Coupled with the social and emotional toll that the pandemic has taken on children and families throughout the region, it has never been more important to just get out and play and have fun.”

YMCAs across the country will be celebrating Healthy Kids Day, making it one of the largest single events dedicated to children’s health. Aside from indoor and outdoor activities, the YMCA East Hampton RECenter’s Healthy Kids Day celebration will include a tour of its summer camp program for interested parents. In addition, the Y will be collecting non-perishable food items to support local families in need through its partnership with Island Harvest.

According to the CDC, regular physical activity can prevent serious health problems associated with being overweight or obese, such as diabetes and cancer. In addition to burning calories and keeping blood sugar levels balanced, regular physical activity makes our bones and muscles strong, builds strength, relieves stress, and improves sleep and overall mental health. The YMCA of Long Island will be holding Healthy Kids Day Celebrations at each of its four other YMCA branches, including Glen Cove, Patchogue, Great South Bay and Huntington.

“For more than 100 years, we have been proud to be a beacon of hope and health for family and children throughout the Huntington region,” said Brigis. “After all that this community has endured over the past few years, we are excited to bring back Healthy Kids Day.”
