SOUTHAMPTON, NY — As a powerful snowstorm pummeled the East End Saturday, Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman declared a state of emergency that is set to last until Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

The "severe weather event of snow accumulation, accompanied by high winds, is impacting the south shore of Long Island, including the Town of Southampton," Schneiderman said, adding that "public safety is imperiled and an imminent danger exists."

The state of emergency indicates that town officials, the highway superintendent and police are authorized to take whatever actions are necessary to protect life and property, and public infrastructure, and to provide emergency assistance when necessary, Schneiderman said.

"It is imperative that the roads are cleared for emergency vehicles in these expanded cold and icy conditions. Therefore, all private roads with snow accumulations in excess 6 inches are authorized to be cleared by the town highway department," Schneiderman said.

Also on Saturday, town transfer stations are closed and residents are encouraged to use caution if attempting to visiting other outdoor town facilities as there may be reduced or restricted access until such time as the snow has been able to be cleared.
