Driver Threatening Suicide Leads Police On Pursuit, Crashes: Cops

MASTIC BEACH, NY — A driver threatening suicide led Southampton police on a pursuit into Mastic Beach before crashing Monday morning, authorities said.

According to Southampton Town Police, the incident took place at 6:55 a.m. when dispatchers received a call from a person who required medical attention.

Southampton Town Police, New York State Police, and Suffolk County Police located the vehicle and attempted to stop the driver, who refused to pull over and continued driving to Mastic Beach before crashing at Johns Neck Road and Fairview Drive, authorities said.

Officers followed the driver, who was adhering to the speed limit, on a "slow pursuit" for several miles, authorities said.

The driver was transported to an area hospital, police said.

Southampton Town crisis negotiators, Suffolk County aviation, and a Suffolk County K9 unit all assisted in getting help to the driver without any injuries, police said.
