Obituary: Joan Marie McPhail, Formally of Sag Harbor, Dies at 67

The grandmother of four passed away last Wednesday.

Joan Marie McPhail, a former Sag Harbor resident, died on July 22, at her home in New York City, following a prolonged illness. She was 67.

She was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late Emily Waitekus Pazniokas and John Pazniokas.

Joan graduated from Trinity High School in River Forest, Illinois, and earned her undergraduate degree from Purdue University.

She was retired from the Motor Vehicles Division of the State of Arizona in Surprise, Arizona, where she lived for nearly 20 years.

Joan was an exceptional mother and grandmother, who enthusiastically traveled the country to be with her children and grandchildren in support of all of their activities. She enjoyed being with her family the most, and was happiest at the beach, where she passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Phillip Mark MacPhail and Laura Jean McPhail, and her grandchildren, Madeline Hayley McPhail, Abigail Jean McPhail Faessen and Nicholas James MacPhail.

She is also survived by her siblings, Teresa Nichols, Christine Nelson and James Pazniokas.

A celebration of her life was held at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in New York City, on Thursday, July 30.
