Remembering Nancy Strauss Ireland

BRIDGEHAMPTON, NY — Nancy Strauss Ireland of Bridgehampton, New York and New York City passed away peacefully on May 16, 2019. She was surrounded at her bedside by her husband, Gary, and children, Bryan and Sydney, and her sister Serena.

Nancy was born in New York City and grew up in Demarest, New Jersey. She attended Tulane University and continued her educational journey at Fordham University Graduate School of Business, thereafter working in finance and insurance, including 15 years at Morgan Stanley.

Once she met her husband, Gary, and they were blessed with children, she found her true calling in education when attending the Bank Street College of Education. Nancy served the Bank Street community as a classroom teacher, a Camper Support Coordinator and Special Education Itinerant Teacher. Since 2014, Nancy also taught graduate students at City College of CUNY. She proudly served on the Board of Trustees at the Alexander Robertson School. Nancy engaged in a long and courageous battle against cancer and was an inspiring member of Gilda’s Club in NYC, touching the lives of so many members and their families.

Nancy’s life was a testament to loving, learning and caring, while proving that she could be a compassionate friend to all. She never stopped giving back to others and educating children until her end, despite what she was facing in her personal life. Nancy continues to serve as an inspiration and a tower of strength to all who crossed her path. She will be deeply missed.

Nancy’s life was celebrated by an overflow crowd at the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel on May 23, 2019.

Nancy is survived by her husband, Gary and her children, Bryan and Sydney, as well as her brother Justin Strauss (Gloria), sister Serena Strauss Samph(Ian), Samantha Strauss (Michael), as well as her brother-in-law David Lewison and many nieces and nephews, including Grant, Bridgette, Layla, Scarlett, Eliza, and Ty. Nancy is predeceased by her mother Barbara Balaber-Strauss, her father Richard Strauss and her sister Elizabeth Strauss Lewison.

Up to the end, Nancy worked to ensure that everyone else was taken care of and had the proper tools to travel their paths. We are all grateful for the care at Memorial Sloan Kettering, their empathy and wonderful community outreach during this time. Nancy and her family ask that donations be made to two of her favorite organizations, Gilda’s Club and the Nightingale-Bamford School. Please keep your loved ones close.
